Uluwatu Map and Journey Times
Bali has no railway. Every arrival at Pura Luhur Uluwatu is by road. The journey time from where you are staying is the single fact that decides which trip is bookable for you.
Where Uluwatu sits on the Bukit Peninsula
The temple sits at Pecatu, in South Kuta, at the southwest tip of the Bukit Peninsula. The Bukit is a raised limestone table hanging off the bottom of Bali, joined to the rest of the island by a narrow neck at Jimbaran. Everything here is on that table: the airport at the neck, the resorts of Nusa Dua down the east coast, the surf beaches down the west.
That geography is why journey times are longer than the distances suggest. There is one main road down the western side and it carries everyone.

Journey times from where people actually stay
| From | Distance | Typical drive | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jimbaran | 18 km | 30–40 min | The closest base of any size |
| Nusa Dua | 22 km | 40–50 min | Add 15 min in the late afternoon |
| Kuta | 24 km | 50–70 min | Airport traffic is the variable |
| Seminyak | 28 km | 60–80 min | Allow 90 min for a 16:00 arrival |
| Denpasar | 27 km | 60–75 min | Slow through the city either way |
| Canggu | 35 km | 80–100 min | No fast road; the coast route is longer |
| Ubud | 45 km | 100–140 min | The longest common run on the island's south |
| Airport (DPS) | 20 km | 35–50 min | Straight down the toll and the Bukit road |
Those are one-way times for a mid-afternoon departure. Add to all of them on a Saturday, in the wet season, and around the Galungan holidays.
The one road in, and what it does at 16:00
Jalan Raya Uluwatu runs the length of the western Bukit, and everything converges on it. Beach traffic comes back up it, tour vans go down it, and the scooters do both. Between four and six in the afternoon it carries everyone heading for the same six o'clock performance.
The practical consequence is simple. Whatever your journey time above, add half an hour if you need to be at the gate before five. Every operator here builds that into their pickup time, which is one of the quieter reasons a guided run is easier than driving yourself.
Arriving by scooter
Plenty of people do, and the road is fine for a confident rider in daylight. Three things to know. You need an international permit with a motorcycle entitlement to be insured. The last stretch is steep and busy at dusk. And the ride back north after the dance is in the dark, with a lot of other traffic going the same way.
Parking is IDR 2,000 and the bays fill before the performance. If you are not certain about riding at night, this is the trip to take a car for.
Where the trips collect you
Most collect from your hotel or villa. Between them the pickup zones cover Kuta, Seminyak, Jimbaran, Denpasar, Nusa Dua and Ubud. One operator adds a small stated surcharge for the Ubud and Gianyar side, because of the distance. One trip meets at the temple entrance instead, which suits anyone already on the Bukit.
If you are staying in Canggu or further north, check the pickup zone before you book rather than after. It is the most common reason a departure that looks perfect turns out not to serve you.
What else is within twenty minutes
Suluban Beach is five minutes away, Padang Padang ten, Melasti twenty and Garuda Wisnu Kencana twenty-five. Jimbaran Bay, where most evenings finish, is half an hour back toward the airport. That cluster is why a single afternoon on the Bukit can hold three or four stops without any of them feeling rushed.
The full list, with how long each one needs, is in things to do.
Not sure the drive works from your hotel?
Most of these tours collect across the south and one meets at the gate itself, so there is a version that starts where you are staying.
Opening hours and the 2026 gate price are on visitor information, the temple itself on Pura Luhur Uluwatu, and the seasonal picture on weather. To skip the driving altogether, a private Uluwatu tour handles it door to door — the fares are on Uluwatu Tours.
