Three genuinely different ways onto that clifftop: an evening in a car of your own, a walk-up ticket with the dance seat already held, and a full day down the peninsula. An Uluwatu sunset temple tour is only one of them.

From UbudYour group only

Collect your driver at the hotel in the early afternoon and keep the same car until you are back after dark. The run goes straight for the clifftop: an hour at Pura Luhur Uluwatu as the light drops, the Kecak and Fire Dance at six, then grilled seafood on the sand at Jimbaran Bay. Entrance fees, dance tickets and the dinner are each booking options rather than automatic inclusions, so choose the version you want before you pay. The car seats six at most, which gets you down to the beach quickly once the amphitheatre empties.

Meet a local guide at the temple entrance and walk in with both tickets already bought. Two hours covers the outer courtyards, the cliff path and a seat for the Kecak and Fire Dance in the amphitheatre next door, which is the one thing the gate sells separately and the one that sells out. Nothing about the day depends on a car, so it suits you if you are already on the Bukit or happy to arrange your own ride down. At two hours it is an Uluwatu half day tour in the literal sense, and it begins at the temple gate rather than at a hotel door.

The destination

About the Uluwatu Headland

Pura Luhur Uluwatu sits at Pecatu, on the southwest tip of the Bukit Peninsula, and you meet it on a limestone cliff about seventy metres above open ocean. Its origins run back to the 11th century, and in the 16th the priest Dang Hyang Nirartha chose this headland as the place of his moksha, which is where the honorific in its name comes from. It is one of six sanctuaries holding the island's spiritual balance, and it guards the southwest.

History

Founded in the 11th century and associated with Mpu Kuturan, then raised to its present standing by Dang Hyang Nirartha four hundred years later. One of Bali's six sad kahyangan temples, and still a working one: its own community holds a piodalan here on the 210-day Balinese calendar rather than the Gregorian one.

Access

Open 07:00 to 19:00 daily. A foreign adult pays IDR 60,000 and a child IDR 40,000 since January 2026, and the sarong you must wear is included. The Kecak seat is bought separately and sells out. Be through the gate by four if you want both, because the amphitheatre fills from half past.

Things to Do

Suluban Beach is five minutes away through a cave passage, Padang Padang ten, and Melasti and Pandawa sit at the bottom of roads cut through thirty metres of white cliff. Garuda Wisnu Kencana is twenty-five minutes off, and Jimbaran Bay half an hour, where the seafood grills put tables on the sand.

What you will see

Named Highlights of an Uluwatu Temple Tour

Six things worth walking to on your hour up there, and one you should keep your sunglasses well away from.

The candi bentar split gate

One carved tower cut in two and drawn apart, so you walk in between the halves of a single thing.

The northern cliff path

Several hundred metres along the rim, and the one place the temple photographs with open ocean behind it.

The Kecak and Fire Dance

You watch seventy men chant the rhythm with no gamelan behind them, around a ring of fire, at six every evening.

Seventy metres of raised reef

The whole Bukit is coral limestone that came out of the sea, which is why the rock under your feet is pale and full of shell.

The macaques

A wild troop that has learned what you are carrying. Zip your bag before the gate and they become the best free entertainment here.

Suluban Beach, five minutes away

You reach the sand through a cave passage in the base of the cliff, and the tide closes it twice a day.

Plan your visit

Everything You Need Before You Go

Getting there

There is no railway anywhere on Bali, so every arrival is by road. Jimbaran is half an hour away, Kuta about an hour, Ubud closer to two — and between four and six everyone is heading for the same performance, so add thirty minutes to whatever an app tells you.

See journey times

Tickets and hours

Open 07:00 to 19:00, every day. A foreign adult pays IDR 60,000 and a child IDR 40,000, and the sarong you have to wear is inside that price. The rate rose on 1 January 2026, which is why so many pages still print less.

Hours, fees and access

The dance

Performances at 18:00 and 19:00 in an amphitheatre beside the temple, about an hour each, with the ticket sold separately from admission. Take the six o'clock: the sun sets during it in every month of the year.

Sunset tours and the dance

When to go

It is 29 to 32°C all year, so the rain does the work. August and September are the driest and clearest; December and January bring the heaviest rain and the latest sunsets. The cliff path has almost no shade.

Weather month by month

With children

It works well from about seven upward: a short walk, an hour of fire and story with no dialogue to follow, and monkeys to watch from a safe distance. The 19:00 finish is the thing to plan around.

Be honest with me

Do You Need a Guided Tour at All?

Not always, and it is worth saying so. If you are staying on the Bukit, in Jimbaran or in Nusa Dua, you can drive down, buy Uluwatu tickets at the window for IDR 60,000 and a dance seat for about IDR 150,000, and walk in. That visit costs you roughly IDR 210,000 a head and nothing else.

What Uluwatu guided tours actually solve is the road and the seat. The performance is at a fixed six o'clock, the amphitheatre is unreserved, and its box office runs out on busy nights — and the drive back after several hundred people leave at once is the part nobody plans for. A Bali Uluwatu sunset tour that holds the seat and keeps the car waiting starts at a few dollars more than the ticket alone, which is the whole of the argument.

How the Evening Works

1

Pick your fare

Compare what each one covers for you — entry, the dance seat, dinner — before you look at the price.

2

Get collected

Most trips take you from your own hotel across the south; one meets you at the temple gate instead.

3

Walk the clifftop

An hour gives you the split gate, the courtyards and the northern path, with the light already falling.

4

Take a seat by 16:30

The amphitheatre is unreserved and it fills. The upper northern rows put the sunset behind the stage.

5

Six o'clock

An hour of chanting and fire, and then seafood on the sand at Jimbaran if your fare includes it.

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

How much do Uluwatu tours cost?
From $20 per person for a full day down the peninsula with temple and dance entry in the fare. A private car for the evening starts at about $31, and the long two-temple days that add Tanah Lot reach $100. Every figure is the operator's own starting price and every one of them refunds in full up to 24 hours ahead.
Do the tours include the temple entrance ticket?
Some do, some do not, and a few make it a paid option you choose at booking. Each listing states its own position, so read the fare before you pay. Where entry is left out the operator expects you to buy it at the ticket window, which takes cash.
What time does the Kecak and Fire Dance start?
Six o'clock, every evening. The Kecak and Fire Dance is staged in an open-air amphitheatre beside the temple, and a second performance follows at seven. Six is the one worth having: the sun goes down between about 18:08 in May and 18:46 in January, so it always sets during that show and never during the later one.
Is the dance ticket included in the temple entrance fee?
No. Admission and the performance are sold at separate windows, and a dance seat runs about IDR 150,000 for an adult and IDR 75,000 for a child. The box office opens in the late afternoon and sells out on busy nights, which is the main reason people book a trip that has already secured the seat.
What are Uluwatu Temple's opening hours?
07:00 to 19:00 daily, Bali time. Be through the gate by 18:00 if you also want the dance, because the amphitheatre fills long before the performance starts. Early morning is the quietest hour of the day on the cliff path.
How much is the entrance fee in 2026?
IDR 60,000 for a foreign adult and IDR 40,000 for a foreign child; Indonesian visitors pay IDR 40,000 and IDR 30,000. The rates went up on 1 January 2026, which is why so many English-language pages still quote IDR 30,000 — those Uluwatu ticket prices are the old ones. Parking is IDR 4,000 for a car and IDR 2,000 for a motorbike.
What should I wear at the temple?
Knees covered, and the sarong and sash that do it are handed to you at the gate and are already inside the ticket price. There is nothing to hire and nothing to buy. Flat shoes make the cliff path easier, and something with a zip keeps your phone away from the monkeys.
Do I need to book in advance?
Yes, particularly for the evening. The amphitheatre has a fixed number of seats and the box office runs out on busy nights, so book a few days ahead between June and September and 24 to 48 hours ahead the rest of the year. Booking a trip that holds the seat takes that risk off you entirely.
Can I cancel my booking?
Yes. Every trip listed here refunds in full up to 24 hours before it starts, at no charge, so an Uluwatu booking made early costs you nothing if the plan changes. Some operators can also cancel from their side for bad weather, and those refund in full as well.
How long does a tour take?
Anything from two hours to twelve. The guided gate ticket is two hours, the adventure trips behind the cliffs are two to five, the evening runs with dinner take six to nine, and the days that add Tanah Lot run eleven to twelve. Pick the length first and the rest of the choice gets much smaller.
Where do the tours pick you up?
Most collect you at your hotel or villa: Kuta, Seminyak, Jimbaran, Denpasar, Nusa Dua and Ubud all appear across the listings. One meets you at the temple entrance instead, which suits anyone already staying on the Bukit. Pickup from the Ubud side sometimes carries a small extra charge, which is stated on the booking page before you pay.
Are the monkeys a problem?
They are practised thieves and they go for sunglasses, hats and phones. Put everything in a zipped bag before you walk through the gate and you will be fine. Travellers say again and again that having a guide beside them is what stopped anything going.
Can I visit Uluwatu Temple without a tour?
Yes, and plenty of people do. Drive, ride-hail or scooter down to Pecatu, pay at the ticket window and buy a dance seat at the box office beside the amphitheatre. What a guided trip buys you is the seat already held, the traffic handled and somebody who knows which way the cliff path runs when it is crowded.
Is Uluwatu Temple wheelchair accessible?
No. Every operator here says the same, and the site is a clifftop with steps, uneven stone and a sloping path along the edge. Some listings also ask for a moderate level of fitness. The amphitheatre itself is tiered seating reached on foot.
What is the best time of day to visit Uluwatu?
Late afternoon, arriving around four. That gives you the cliff path in soft light, a dance ticket before the queue builds and a seat before six. Go at seven in the morning instead if you want the place close to empty and are happy to miss the performance.
