Your evening on the cliff
Pickup is early-to-mid afternoon, timed against where you are staying rather than
against a fixed departure. From Ubud that means leaving in good time; from the southern
towns it is a shorter run. The driver is yours for the whole evening, which is the
thing this fare is really buying.
You arrive at Pura Luhur Uluwatu with the light still high enough to walk in. An hour
covers the split gate, the outer courtyards and the northern arm of the cliff path
— the stretch that looks back at the temple with open ocean behind it. Then south
to the amphitheatre, which starts filling from about half past four.
The performance is an hour. A chorus of men chants the rhythm with no gamelan behind
them at all, and the Ramayana plays out around a ring of fire as the sun goes down
behind the stage. Travellers on this trip name their drivers again and again for putting
them in the right part of the theatre for exactly that.
Afterwards the car takes you down to Jimbaran Bay for grilled seafood at a table on
the sand, and then home. The whole thing runs about seven hours.

You want the evening handled end to end and you are travelling as a couple, a pair of friends or a small family. Six seats is the cap, and the car waiting for you afterwards is worth more than it sounds when several hundred people leave the amphitheatre at once.
Book something else if
You are already staying on the Bukit and have your own transport, in which case the gate ticket with a guide gives you the same two hours for less. If you want the beaches and the statue as well, take the full day down the peninsula instead.

Pickup is from selected locations across south Bali, confirmed with you after booking rather than fixed to one address. Ubud is served and is the longest run on the list, so expect an early departure if that is where you are staying. Journey times from every common base are on the map.
Know before you go

Zip your bag before the gate. The macaques take sunglasses, hats and phones, and they are quick.
