How to Visit Uluwatu Temple: Hours, the Gate Price and the Kecak Dance

What the gate costs in 2026, and why other pages say less

This is the fact most visitors arrive with wrong. Admission went up on 1 January 2026, and a great many well-read English-language pages still print the old figure of IDR 30,000. Here is what the board at the window actually says:

Two-tier pricing is standard at Indonesian cultural sites and is published openly at the entrance. Take rupiah in cash: the ticket window works in notes, and so does the dance box office.

Opening hours, and the one time that matters more

Seven in the morning to seven at night, every day of the week, with no closure for lunch and no weekly rest day. If you only want the cliff, the courtyards and the view, any hour inside that window works.

The time that shapes a plan is 18:00. That is the first performance, seating is unreserved, and the amphitheatre fills from about half past four. Arrive at four and the afternoon works. Arrive at half past five and you will spend it queueing. Full detail sits on the visitor information page.

The Kecak and Fire Dance, and which performance to take

The performance happens in an open-air amphitheatre cut into the cliff beside the temple, not inside it. A chorus of men chants the rhythm — there is no gamelan at all, which is what makes it sound unlike anything else in Bali — while the Ramayana plays out around a ring of fire.

Take the six o'clock. Sunset on this coast falls between about 18:08 in May and 18:46 in January, so the sun always goes down during the first show and never during the second. The seven o'clock performance is the same hour of theatre with the temple gate already closed behind you. Sunset times for every month are on the weather page.

Dance tickets are sold separately from admission at a box office by the amphitheatre, at roughly IDR 150,000 for an adult and IDR 75,000 for a child. It opens in the late afternoon, and on a busy evening it runs out.

Getting there, and how long to allow

There is no railway anywhere on Bali, so every arrival is by road. From Jimbaran allow half an hour; from Kuta or Seminyak about an hour; from Ubud closer to two. Between four and six, when everyone is heading for the same performance, add another thirty minutes to whatever you were told. The map and journey times page has the full table.

• Ride-hail works well going down and thins out coming back, when several hundred people leave at once.
• Scooter is fine in daylight for a confident rider; the last stretch is steep, and the ride home is in the dark.
• A driver for the afternoon is what most people end up doing, because it removes both problems at once.

What to wear, and what to do about the monkeys

Knees covered, which the included sarong handles. Flat shoes make the cliff path easier, because it is uneven stone with a drop on the seaward side.

The macaques are the other half of the dress code. They take sunglasses, hats, phones and anything hanging loose, and they are practised at it. Put everything in a bag that zips before you go through the gate and they turn into the best free entertainment on the peninsula. Travellers say repeatedly that having a guide beside them is what stopped anything going.

How long you actually need

What the gate price does not cover

Three things, and none of them is obvious from the ticket. The dance is separate, which is the big one. Parking is charged at the barrier rather than at the window. And anything you buy on the way in — water, a drink at a warung, a sarong you did not need — is cash at a site where cards are not much use.

Budget IDR 250,000 a head for the whole visit if you are arriving under your own steam and want the performance. That figure is what makes the guided options worth comparing rather than dismissing.

Where the inner courtyard rule comes in

The innermost courtyard is reserved for Hindu worshippers at prayer. That is normal at every Balinese temple and not a restriction aimed at visitors. Buying at the gate or booking ahead

Do the arithmetic before you decide. Admission and a dance seat together come to about IDR 210,000 a head at the window, and you still have to get to Pecatu and back after dark. A guided ticket that holds both seats and puts someone at the entrance starts at From $28. A private car for the whole afternoon and evening starts at From $31.

That gap is much smaller than most people expect, which is the single most useful thing to know. If you are already staying on the Bukit and happy to drive yourself, buy at the gate and go early.
